ELK TAG AUCTION closes 2-29-09 @ 4pm MST

Elk Auction Form

That’s right!  Bid on your own world-class trophy Elk hunting excursion at the foothills of the Rockies. The Blackfeet Nation, for the first time in history is proud to announce that we no longer will have a waiting list of 3 years for that non-member hunter that wishes to partake in such an unforgettable and awarding experience.

Non-members will be afforded to hunt in the 14,000-acre foothills area locally known as Boulder-Flattop. This area was closed to all hunting hiking and vehicles since 1982 and just as recent as 2002, when the Tribe allowed 10 elk tags per year, for hunting in this area.

Our Reservation, located on the Canadian border, shares its western border with Glacier National Park’s eastern border. The Reservation’s entire Rocky Mountain Front is open for scheduled and regulated hunting seasons. The Boulder-Flattop area is only open to elk hunting and only 5 non-member tags will be awarded to the highest bidders.

Our bow-hunting season will begin on September 13, 2008 and end on October 10, 2008. The rifle season will begin October 11, 2008 and end on December 5, 2008. All hunting will require that you hire on a Tribal Member Outfitter to guide you on your hunt. There will not be a time limit or a scheduled hunt. You will be allowed to hunt at your leisure and can come back as many times as you wish until you take your elk.

This hunting package will provide the hunter an opportunity to reserve lodging at Montana’s famous Duck Lake Lodge, which is, only minutes from the Boulder-Flattop hunting grounds. This package will also include an annual fishing permit allowing the hunter to come back and enjoy “monster” rainbow trout fishing at any of the Reservation’s 27 fresh water lakes.

Please check out our photo gallery to see the many hunting opportunities available here on our Reservation, but don’t forget to also check out the scenery, which in itself is breathtaking and under the Big Sky of Montana.

In the past 5 years, our non-member elk hunts were offered on a first come first serve basis, but each year only 5 hunters were afforded tags, therefore all others were put onto a waiting list. Some of the perspective hunters were so far down the list that they would have to wait 3 years to get their chance to hunt. This year for 2008, the Blackfeet Nation decided to open these 5 hunts for competitive bidding. We felt that this would give the avid hunter an opportunity to secure the elite hunting experience he has longed for.

Our Blackfeet Fish and Wildlife program will again be at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s exposition in Reno this coming February. The past 5 years we donated an elk for auction and just last year, we donated a moose tag. This February we will only donate a moose hunt, (in 2004 a tribal member shot a Montana state record, 199 6/8), thus giving those hunters at the expo an opportunity to bid on one of our 5 elk tags. We also have a link on the Native American Fish and Wildlife Society website.

The starting bid for an elk hunt in the Boulder-Flattop area will be $15,000.00. This has been the price for the hunt the past 3 years. Almost all the bull elk taken from this area were scored on Boone & Crocket at least 350 and one bull elk taken in 2003 scored over 400.

The award date for the elk tags will be 4:00 p.m. on February 29, 2008. This will give the hunter plenty of time to set up and schedule a hunt next fall. Please enter your bio information and bid in the Elk Auction Form provided. The Blackfeet Fish and Wildlife will only use the information on this form, for the purpose of the bid and getting in touch with you for notification of a successful bid. Your information will not be shared with any other agency, entities, public groups or individuals.

Every Monday morning at 11:00 a.m., from the bid starting date, a posting of the 5 highest bids (initials of bidder and home location) will be available online at Elk Auction Top Bidders.
